As the world celebrated yet another Mother’s Day on Sunday, many, including celebrities, took to social media to give shout-outs to the biggest pillars in their lives. Author and entrepreneur Twinkle Khanna, meanwhile, dedicated the latest edition of her column Mrs Funnybones to discussing the evolution of a mother’s roles and responsibilities since her own childhood and through her journey into parenthood.

Mentioning that while her mother Dimple Kapadia’s major duties included ensuring that she and her sister, Rinke Khanna, finished the two rotis on their plates and had their hair properly braided, Twinkle wrote in her column in Times of India that she, as a modern mother, has to moonlight as a therapist, event planner, stylist, educator, motivational coach and nutritionist besides being a hairdresser.

Twinkle also mentioned that while she and her sister’s social activities included simple things such as chasing chickens in a nearby dump, running down a nearby shop for sweets on credit and collecting the bottle caps of the soft drink Gold Spot for a contest, modern mothers have to deal with limiting their kids’ screentime while ensuring they stick to “gentle parenting” so as to not scar the kids, something she noted mothers of the previous generation weren’t bothered about.

She further shared a funny anecdote involving her husband, actor Akshay Kumar, when he indirectly referred to her as a “cow”. After embracing motherhood for the first time in 2002, she noted, when a visitor asked Akshay where Twinkle was, he said that she was unavailable because she was “milking”, referring to breastfeeding. “[That] immediately sealed my transformation from a hot chick to a cow,” she quipped.

Twinkle also elaborated on the many struggles modern mothers face as they hold down the fort, look after the kid(s) and ensure that they are raised “right”, pursue their own careers and maintain their physique, all simultaneously. The former actor further shared a worry wondering if modern mothers were wrapping their kids in many layers of bubble wrap by raising them in a homogenised and sanitised world that they have no experience in the real world. She also wondered if this was why today’s kids, with their similar mannerisms, clothes and interests, appear to be clones of each other.The columnist also addressed the pressure modern mothers face in terms of striking the right balance while raising their children, in accordance with today’s codes and mandates. “Too much freedom, and you will be seen as uninvolved. Too little, and you are stifling them,” she noted, while emphasising that this tumultuous journey marred by blame and guilt will remain unchanged for all mothers.
