Mission Mangal Director Jagat Shakti Embarks On Chandrayaan-3 Film With ISRO Sister's Expertise

After Chandrayaan-3’s successful moon landing, Bollywood filmmakers rushed to register titles to make movies on the historical event. One such filmmaker is Mission Mangal’s director Jagan Shakti.

Making an announcement for a Chandrayaan-3 film, the director expressed his desire to be the first one to showcase the historical event on-screen. He even added that he wants to work with the same team from Mission Mangal, but did not confirm whether Akshay Kumar would be part of the project. The internet has already assumed that the Mission Mangal actor would be partaking in the Chandrayaan-3 biopic, given his history of engaging in films which are based on historical events.

Kumar played the role of Rakesh Dhawan, a scientist at ISRO who takes the fall for the failed launch of GSLV-F06 on 25 December 2010 and is relocated to Mangalyaan (Mars-craft) as punishment. The film is further based on the life of ISRO scientists who worked on India’s first interplanetary expedition Mars Orbiter Mission.

Jagat Shakti’s sister works at ISRO, and he wants to use her insight to make a film on Chandrayaan-3.

“We won’t miss the chance. I’m now giving it some thought. My older sister has provided some advice regarding the same. She is a senior scientist in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). I hope to make a film on Chandrayaan 3 with the team of Mission Mangal,” he told Dainik Bhaskar during an interview.

He also took help from ISRO scientists during the making of Mission Mangal. His research team collaborated with the scientists in order to make a detailed film. The writers of the film took inspiration from Hollywood films such as Interstellar and Gravity to showcase Mission Mangal to the Indian audience. Made on a budget of just Rs 32 crore, the film earned a whopping Rs 290 crore at the box office, making it a blockbuster.

Now, filmmakers have another chance to capitalise on a historical event as big as Chandrayaan-3. As mentioned before, several producers rushed to the Mumbai offices of the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA), Producers Guild of India and Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) to register names. However, not everyone’s request will be approved and only a handful of producers would be allowed to use Chandrayaan-3 as a subject of an upcoming movie.

“We have been getting requests for titles based on Chandrayaan 3 for the last four weeks. We have received 12-15 title requests, including Chandrayan Ki Yatra. Excitement toh hai. Many people didn’t even wait for the event to happen, at least the ones who were smart were quick to make a move,” revealed Anil Nagrath of the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA).

Names such as Chandrayaan-3, Mission Chandrayaan, Hindustand Ki Shaan Chandrayaan, etc. have been booked. Nagrath added that it will take another two weeks or so for the film titles to get approved, while other proposed titles include Vikram Lander, Chandrayaan-3; The New Chapter, Bharat Chand Par, etc.
