Let’s just say that the trailer for the Akshay Kumar film Mission Mangal is direct and to the point. Under the careful cover of Akshay Kumar’s celebrity, a ‘based-on-true-events’ story revolves around the lives of five women who were instrumental in ISRO’s Mangalyaan mission. The way Kumar says, ‘Duniya se kaho, COPY THAT!’ at the end of the trailer is where it’s most noticeable. He is a hero who needs his dhamaakedar punchline, regardless of the fact that he is portraying an ISRO scientist.

It’s interesting to note that Vidya Balan, an actor who has starred in solo 100-crore films, co-stars with Kumar and also plays a scientist. But when it comes to using the act of frying puris to illustrate a basic scientific idea, Kumar will be the one ‘explaining,’ with Balan taking on a supporting role. Even though Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen, and Kirti Kulhari are all skilled actors on their own, they rely on the man-savior to carry out all the hard work.

The Mission Mangal trailer is evocative of the Hollywood production Hidden Figures, which similarly traced the life of three African-American women and their crucial role in the United States and Soviet Union’s space race in the early 1960s. Even that movie, which (mostly) played down its racial commentary, came across as much more real and authentic in letting the three women take center stage. Akshay Kumar has the entire stage to himself in Mission Mangal.

It’s still too early to evaluate the movie based just on its trailer. All we’re really trying to say, though, is that you shouldn’t be shocked if Akshay Kumar chants ‘Vande Mataram’ as the movie ends and all five of the women turn into silhouettes. After all, it’s Independence Day.

Bonus fact: Sajid-Farhad, who worked closely with Sajid Khan, David Dhawan, and Rohit Shetty, wrote the script for the movie. That clarifies it, then?
