Dalip Tahil has been a part of the film industry for the past 49 years and has portrayed significant characters in numerous blockbuster movies, showcasing his exceptional acting skills. Initially starting as a theatre actor, Tahil made his entry into the entertainment world with a notable role in Shyam Benegal’s classic art film Ankur (1974).

Following this, his second film and debut commercial venture came about six years later when he was cast in a minor role in Ramesh Sippy’s Shaan (1980), penned by Salim–Javed. Starring Sunil Dutt, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha in key roles, Tahil played a member of the villain’s gang.

Dalip Tahil recently opened up about his experience filming for his first-ever commercial movie scene and mentioned that it also featured Amitabh Bachchan.

‘We were shooting on Ambedkar Road in Bandra, and that was my first commercial film scene. The scene featured me, a member of the villain’s gang, getting a shave when Bachchan Saab comes and snatches my knife, holding it close to my throat to extract information,’ Tahil recalled during a conversation with Siddharth Kannan.

‘While I was waiting on the set, I heard a voice from behind saying, ‘Hi, I am Mr Amitabh Bachchan.’ Immediately, I started feeling unwell. Due to my background in theatre, I thought I could handle the scene, but everything fell apart when I stood in front of him to shoot the actual scene. I began forgetting my lines,’ he said.

‘Observing this, Bachchan Saab came up to me and said, ‘Relax. Don’t worry. Take your time. Do whatever you need to do. Don’t think it’s me who is standing in front of you; just proceed with the scene as you wish.’ It took 3-4 takes, but he made me feel at ease,’ Tahil added.

Dalip Tahil was last seen in Sailesh Kolanu’s action suspense-thriller HIT: The First Case (2022).
