In a recent interview, filmmaker Dharmesh Darshan spoke about the unprecedented success of Raja Hindustani.

Director Dharmesh Darshan, in a tell-all interview, recently opened up about his professional and personal life. Talking about his biggest film Raja Hindustani, the filmmaker shared how the success was unprecedented given he did not have a backing. He also shared how the Aamir Khan-Karisma Kapoor film is the only one in the history of cinema that has five release dates.

In an interview with Lehren Retro, Dharmesh was asked about how Raja Hindustani joined the ranks of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Hum Aapke Hai Koun?, Gadar, and even Mughal-E-Azam.

Calling the film a ‘blockbuster’, the director said that the movie became bigger with time. He shared that after a solid opening on Friday, by Monday, more cinemas started reaching out to release his film.

“The exhibitors started calling that they wanted to release it in more theatres.

By the next Thursday, the craze was immense,” he shared. Referring to how Hum Aapke Hai Koun’s release was monitored in one theatre, he said, “That’s something I feel proud about.

My immediate predecessor was Sooraj Barjatya and Aditya Chopra. Here, Rajshri was monitoring the release. Yash uncle is monitoring the release. I had no one. I was not the producer nor I have a parent who’s monitoring. We just released it nicely.”

Sharing that he is not someone to blow his own trumpet, Dharmesh Darshan said that Aamir Khan had once told him how he had done 25 films previously, and Raja Hindustani’s collection was double the business of those films put together. “The craze really surprised me,” he added.

Further in the conversation, Dharmesh shared how he’s not the kind of filmmaker who would blame the audience for a movie’s feedback. He said that if one is ready to take the bouquets, they should also take brickbats.

The filmmaker also noted how Raja Hindustani was a ‘simple’ film but not an ‘ordinary’ one and that made it notable.
