Karan Johar said that the reaction to Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s Koffee with Karan episode, where the couple spoke about their relationship, angered him.

Karan Johar started the current season of Koffee with Karan with a bang as he invited Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh to his couch and the couple opened up about their love story and relationship, and discussed details that they had never shared with the world before. But, the reaction to the episode from netizens wasn’t all that positive. Deepika specifically faced a lot of trolling after she said that she dated other people after meeting Ranveer. Karan, on the latest episode of the show, said that this reaction “angered” him.

In a chat with Aditya Roy Kapur and Arjun Kapoor, Karan said that he believed it to be one of the most “honest and heartfelt” episodes of all time but it had a “ridiculous kind of after effect.” “I think all three of us came clean on so much of our emotional heft, so many of our feelings and then there was a ridiculous kind of after effect,” he said. Karan explained that the reaction to this episode “angered” him because “I thought it was one of our best episodes.

They were outstandingly honest, they were earnest, they spoke so much, they shared so much, they were so gracious and then you f**king talk about some nonsense. I’m like what do you know about somebody’s personal life and marriage. Tu apne ghar pe dekh na (Look inside your house) is what I wanted to tell all of them. I wanted to show them my f—ing middle finger.”

During the episode, Deepika and Ranveer spoke about being not exclusively committed to each other at the start of their relationship. The two met during the filming of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela over 10 years ago and Deepika shared that even after they started dating each other, “there was no real commitment as such” until they got engaged. She said that even though they were “technically allowed” to date other people, they “would just keep coming back to each other.” The couple has now been married five years.

During the latest episode, Karan also spoke about being “sexuality shamed” by trolls online and said some of the things that reads online are really hurtful. He shared, “They’re talking to me about my sexuality, they talk to me about being a single parent, they bring up my kids, that one really fu**ing… They talk about my mother having raised me not well enough to take that decision right. I’m like who the f**k are you?” He also opened up about body shaming trolls who often target him for his fashion choices.
