Karisma Kapoor candidly shared the difficulties shooting the iconic kissing scene.
The quintessential 90s romance Raja Hindustani received positive reviews for its captivating storyline, exceptional performances, and memorable music. However, what most cine buffs may not be aware of is the challenging circumstances under which the iconic kissing scene between the lead stars Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor was filmed. In an earlier interview with Rajeev Masand, Karisma Kapoor candidly shared the details of the difficulties they faced during the shoot.
The diva revealed that the filming of this scene took place over a span of three days in February, amidst the freezing cold of Ooty, Tamil Nadu. Enduring the harsh weather, the duo had to work from 7 AM to 6 PM, making it an arduous task. She disclosed that they had to go through 47 retakes to perfect the scene, all while battling the shivers caused by the extreme cold.
Director Dharmesh Darshan also discussed the challenges of filming this intimate scene in an earlier interview with Rediff.com. He aimed to create a scene that exuded sensuality without crossing into vulgarity or offensiveness. Being mindful that his film would be watched by audiences of all ages, including children, he wanted to ensure that parents wouldn’t feel uncomfortable with the portrayal.
The hard work put in by the actors and the director paid off well, as Raja Hindustani went on to earn a whopping Rs 78 crore against its modest budget of Rs 6 crore. For those who haven’t yet experienced the film, it revolves around the love story of Raja, a taxi driver, and Aarti. Despite their marriage, Aarti’s stepmother, portrayed by Archana Puran Singh, disapproves of their union and tries to create rifts between them. The couple faces separation but ultimately finds their way back to each other.
The remarkable performances of Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor earned them the prestigious awards for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, for their roles in Raja Hindustani. Additionally, Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathore were recognized as the Best Music Directors for their soulful compositions in the film. Songs like “Aaye Ho Meri Zindagi Mein Tum Bahar Banke” and “Tere Ishq Mein Naachenge” were widely appreciated by cine buffs for their melodious appeal.
