When Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma and cricket pro Virat Kohli first released pictures of their wedding back in 2017, they all but broke the internet. The Tuscany wedding, a private affair that no-one had an inkling about, caught the world’s attention not just because it was unexpected, but also because every aspect of it looked picture-perfect. Close to two years since they tied the knot, #Virushka continues to be one of the country’s most-loved couples, and in a recent interview with Filmfare, Sharma went on record to talk about her decision to get married in her twenties, which by many is still considered early for a female actor in the Indian film industry.

‘Our audience is way more evolved than our industry is,’ Sharma said in the interview. ‘Audiences are just interested in seeing actors on screen. They don’t care about your personal lives, whether you’re married or whether you’re a mother. We need to get out of this headspace. I got married at 29, supposedly young for an actress. But I did it because I was in love. And I am in love.’

If you’re a fan of Anushka Sharma’s work, you’ll agree that the actor has a knack for pushing boundaries, be it with her unconventional on-screen roles, or the decisions she makes IRL. During the interview, the star also touched upon gender roles, saying, ‘Marriage was a natural progression. I’ve always stood for women being treated equally. So, I wouldn’t want to experience the most beautiful moment of my life with fear in mind. If a man doesn’t think twice before getting married and continues to work, then why should a woman think about it? I’m happy that more actresses have got married. People in love are going out there and expressing it. It’s so beautiful to see happy couples together.’

Apart from Anushka Sharma, Bollywood has seen some of its biggest female leads tie the knot in the past two years, including Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. In a sea of traditional red bridal looks, Sharma’s wedding day pick, a beautifully embroidered pastel pink Sabyasachi lehenga, continues to inspire brides everywhere.
