Those who are even a little familiar with the world of music, are familiar with the term ‘autotune’. At one time the songs were recorded live along with the instruments. But now many people spread across the world can record songs. Recorded separately, they are assembled into full music. Auto tune, which adjusts the pitch, is also used in Indian music these days. In a recent music podcast, Arijit Singh was heard to say that Auto-Tune can never make a ‘bad singer’ a ‘good singer’. He also said that AR Rahman was the first to introduce Auto Tune in India.

‘Auto-tune can never make a bad singer a good singer.’ It’s not like you sang whatever you wanted. And Auto-Tune put it in tune. It is not possible.’, Arijit was heard to say.

The singer also said, ‘There was a time when people were big fans of AR Rahman’s songs, he used to use auto-tune in his songs. Where the singers sound sweeter and are more acceptable to the audience.’

Arijit Singh also explained the technical reasons for using Auto-Tune. Said, ‘When a singer sings, their emotions are involved. It can never be perfect. The tone continues to fluctuate. Most singers do, but Sonu Nigam does not. I think that he can never be Besur. Emotions can cause melodic movements. Auto-tune pretty much fixes them.’

Arijit mentions in this podcast that Pritam uses auto-tune in every song. But composers like Mithun Sharma and Vishal Bharadwaj again do not like to use it at all. He also mentioned that AR Rahman was the first to use it in Indian music. ‘Some music composers don’t like it like Mithun Sharma, Vishal Bhardwaj. AR Rahman also doesn’t do it anymore, but he used to do it earlier. He keeps the voice of the singers as they are now. But Pritam’s songs always have auto-tune to make it better,” says the singer.
