It is a common notion that singers from reality shows fade into oblivion after the show is over but this doesn’t hold true for Arijit Singh, who has been the most popular singer in Hindi films for a few years now. Arijit first stepped into the spotlight when he was only 17 with Sony TV’s show Fame Gurukul. Arijit did not win the show but still managed to make a place for himself in the entertainment industry. Qazi Touqeer, who won the show, recently shared in an interview that despite all the success, fame and adulation, Arijit is still as humble as he was back in those days.
In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Qazi said that even though Arijit is immensely successful, he never shows off. He shared that the “Tum Hi Ho” singer has such a simple life that he even goes to buy his grocery on a scooty. “He is still the same guy he was back in 2005. He does so much, but he never shows off. He still goes around on his scooty to buy milk and vegetables. He is unbelievable, incredible,” he said. Qazi said that Arijit walks around in his chappals and track pants, and is never bothered about what other people are thinking about his appearance.

Arijit Singh became a part of Fame Gurukul at 17 and Qazi Touqeer was a couple of years older than him. Recalling the time they spent together on the show, Qazi said that he would tell Arijit to stay up through the night but the “Agar Tum Saath Ho” singer was very particular about his routine because he wanted to protect his voice quality. “I used to tell Arijit to stay up through the night but he would say, ‘No, my throat will go bad.’ I would say, ‘Don’t sleep, that’ll make you feel good,’ but he would sleep anyway,” he recalled with a laugh.

After Fame Gurukul ended, Qazi said that Arijit participated in another Sony TV reality show that combined the contestants of the first season of Indian Idol and Fame Gurukul. He claims that Arijit won this show along with the prize money of Rs 10 lakh. He recalled that Arijit set up a mini-recording studio in his house with the prize money and worked towards perfecting his craft.

Sharing that he was still in touch with Arijit, Qazi said that Arijit and Neha Kakkar are great examples of reality show contestants who made it big.
