Musician Arijit Singh has opened up about how he shapes his voice. He said that when he started out, he wanted to be like Sonu Nigam, and commented on how now people aspire to be like ‘Arijit Singh’. The singer also revealed about his singing process and said that he has worked very hard.

On The Music Podcast, Arijit said, “It’s never about the voice; It’s just about the singing. I have worked very hard to create textures in my voice. It’s like sculpting your voice, because it’s not like my voice matches Shah Rukh Khan. You practice a lot at night until your throat gets tired and you go to sleep, when you remember the next morning, your baritone voice opens up.”

When the host said, “Since the last 5-6 years, many people want to be like Arijit Singh,” the singer replied, “Just like we wanted to become Sonu Nigam. Maa was my first guru. I learned Sa, Re, Ga, Ma and the basics from her. You have to be into music. Always at the rhythm. I’m on the ‘Sa’ note. Even if I hear honking, it is on the note ‘Re’, and when I hear the bell, I hear it on the note ‘Ni’. So obviously I failed.”

Arijit also spoke about a funny incident and said, “They caught our ears, took us out and said, ‘The robbery that happened last night’, ‘They are the thieves’.” Then, the singer remembered that someone told him: “Play.” “Anything except Arijit Singh’s song.” Arijit asked them, ‘I asked, ‘What will I get in return?’ “We will have to reach an agreement.”

The singer recently sang the song ‘O Maahi’ from the upcoming film Dunki. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in pivotal roles.
