1. Gamak Ghar: a feature film directed by Achal Mishra Gamak Ghar will transport you back to those nostalgic, melancholic childhood days when celebrating Diwali meant dressing in new clothing, setting diyas on the porch, and storing firecrackers to dry on the terrace before the big day. Gamak Ghar features a lovely scene in which the uncles, aunts, and cousins all crack crackers together as the light shines on the walls of the omnipresent house, perfectly expressing the ordinary moments of happiness and unity of a small town family.

2. Om Shanti Om: Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Om Shanti Om is a heartfelt reincarnation story with plenty of melodrama and foot-tapping music (Deewangi Deewangi still dominates). It’s a good old time see. Shantipriya, starring Deepika Padukone, is a cinematic premiere to remember. In spite of this, Om Shanti Om’s attitude to the world of celebrity is nonetheless delightfully lighthearted and engaging despite all of its cinematic extravagance.

3. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani: Easily one of the greatest movies of the year, Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani is a purposeful debate between Karan Johar and his own brand of mainstream sensibility. In an attempt to patch things up, the flashy Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) and the astute Bengali journalist Rani (Alia Bhatt) devise a scheme to trade places with one other’s families. This entertaining picture has a wildly contemporary core, and not a single second seems uninteresting.

4. Bangalore Days: In Anjali Menon’s lighthearted and invigorating film, which feels like a warm embrace on a chilly winter night, three cousins from Kerala—Divya (Nazariya Nazim), Kuttan (Nivin Pauly), and Arjun (Dulquer Salmaan)—move to Bangalore. Every one of these personalities is excited to experience all the city has to offer and has their own visions of spending their finest years there. Bangalore Days lightens up for the ideal Diwali viewing with our loved ones while subtly reminding us of the security and nurturing of family ties.

Where to watch: Hotstar and Disney

5. Kathalangi Nights: In this very poignant slice-of-life story, Madhu C. Narayanan follows four siblings as they live in the backwaters of a small Keralan town. With a great deal of compassion and sensitivity, Kumbalangi Nights, filled with lovely, melodic songs by Sushin Shyam, from Cherathukal to the serene Uyiril Thodum, poses significant concerns about mental health, patriarchy, and gender conventions. Kumbalangi Nights is a lovely choice for the holiday season. Enjoy watching and enjoying it with the whole family. Since it is permeated with the understanding that, despite the outside world’s potential for power changes, the home remains a secure environment for embracing change.
