Salman Khan's ex-girlfriend Somy Ali on Deepika Padukone's open relationship remark: Common to date many people together

Deepika Padukone became a subject of debate and controversy when she spoke about being in an open relationship with Ranveer Singh when they both appeared on Karan Johar’s talk show Koffee With Karan 8. She may have been trolled but has found some support in Salman Khan’s former girlfriend and former actor Somy Ali.

The actress defended Padukone in a statement and said, “I do not see anything wrong with dating multiple people simultaneously because one has to make the most important decision in one’s life. Particularly for women in our culture where we end up being the culprit and blamed for everything inevitably. I respect Deepika more after learning that she decided to make that choice rather than going all in for the first guy she met.”

She added, “That to me is a hasty and impulsive decision even more due to the pressure I believe society puts on us women. Given I was raised in a Western culture in the US it’s extremely common to date multiple people on both ends until one decides who they want to get old with. I applaud this way of life because I would rather learn the lesson pre-marriage than after.”

Deepika on her much-publicised statement

I don’t think twice about expressing myself. I’ve grown to become this person where I’m not afraid of speaking my truth or owning up to mistakes. I’m not afraid of saying sorry and I’m okay to be the only person in the room who has a different point of view.

What the actress said

Deepika said, “I wanted to be single for a while because I had come from difficult relationships. I was going through a phase where I said ‘I just don’t want to be attached, don’t want to be committed’. And I had fun! And then he comes along, so I didn’t commit, until he proposed to me. There was no ‘commitment as such. Even if we were technically allowed to see other people, we would just keep coming back to each other.”
