In the realm of Indian fashion, Bollywood celebrities play a significant role in defining trends. Currently, if there’s one trend that’s having a major moment, it is that of white sarees. Celebrity divas have lately been resorting to the timeless appeal of white combined with the evergreen saree silhouette.

From Kriti Sanon’s graceful appearance at the National Film Awards in a resplendent Manish Malhotra white saree punctuated with pastel accents to Rani Mukerji’s Raw Mango pick to celebrate 25 years of the film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, the allure of this classic comeback is undeniable.

Deepika Padukone, too, effortlessly made a strong case for monochrome fashion in a stunning white saree at the ‘Jawan’ press conference.

Interestingly, the divas embraced the colour white for celebratory occasions. Just in case you thought white may not be the most appropriate colour to sport for a celebratory occasion, you may want to think again. Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra, anyway, made strong bridal fashion statements as they sported a rather close shade to white – ivory – for their wedding looks.

Alia, let us add, repeated her ivory Sabyasachi wedding saree to receive the National Film Awards at the ceremony held in New Delhi on October 17. Legendary actress Waheeda Rehman, who was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke award at the event, too exuded elegance in an ivory drape.

Returning to the current buzz about white sarees, it is here with some modish touches. Think of floor-sweeping pallus, backless blouses and pastel accents.

The custom-made Manish Malhotra saree that Kriti Sanon wore featured an amalgam of cupcake hues on the pleats.

Deepika Padukone’s Sabyasachi saree too boasted of contemporary twists. Not only was the all-white saree enlivened with a sequinned black border, but it was teamed with a backless halter-neck blouse as well.

Celebrated fashion designer JJ Valaya, while talking to IndiaToday.in, expressed that the colours white and ivory have been around forever, and are beyond any trends.

“Well, I’ve personally been very biased towards ivory as a colour. It is a perennial favorite. It exudes class, it is elegant and it is timeless,” Valaya said, adding that the colour is almost like a canvas where one can explore various techniques and do multiple things with it.

“Though people might feel that it is a trend at the moment, it is something that has been around forever. One just sees a lot more of it today than we did before,” the designer told us.

White, we must add, is also the colour that dominated the runway during the recently-concluded Lakme Fashion Week hosted in collaboration with the FDCI.

From Disha Patani, who turned showstopper for the label Kalki, to Sanjana Sanghi who walked the ramp for Anju Modi, the divas dazzled in white lehengas.

From Disha Patani to Dia Mirza, white ruled the ramp at Lakme Fashion week 2023.

Dia Mirza too closed the show for designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi in a white ensemble. Jim Sarbh’s ramp moment for Samant Chauhan too, was painted in white.
White certainly seemed to be the designers’ top pick for the season. We are not surprised it is also becoming a favourite among celebrities, who are embracing it to mark their remarkable days, and making us want to say ‘white is the new black!’
