With heavy rains predicted for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup game between the USA and Ireland in Florida on Friday (June 14), Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying for the semifinals have further diminished. A washout will lead to their group-stage exit from the ongoing mega ICC event.

According to BBC Weather, there is a 75 to 90 percent chance of rain during the match, with showers predicted at the scheduled start of 10.30am local time. The temperature will hover around 12 to 20 degrees Celsius with a gentle breeze.

A minimum of five overs per side needs to be bowled to constitute the game.

A washout will lead to the sharing of points in the group stage. In such a scenario, the USA and Ireland will get one point each. The USA currently have four points from three games and getting to five points would help them progress into the Super 8 alongside India (six points from three games) from Group A.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have two points in three games and can reach a maximum of four points if they beat Ireland in their last group-stage match.

Babar Azam and Co. began their campaign with a shock Super-Over loss against the USA. The Men in Green then lost to arch-rivals India by six runs. Babar Azam and Co. finally registered their first win of the tournament against Canada in their last game.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam recently pointed out the importance of win in their last two games. Babar also hoped the wicket would be better in Florida as compared to a tricky New York pitch. He said after their game against Canada (via Cricbuzz):

“We needed this win. Credit to team. We started well and took wickets with the new ball. We had NRR on the back of the mind.”

“We are going to go with the same mindset. The conditions at Florida should be better from here as well. I got out to the same shot. So, I was angry. I still try my level best,” he added.

Pakistan had failed to qualify for the Super Eight stage in the 2016 T20 World Cup. The 2009 champions then lost in the semifinal of the 2021 edition to Australia, who went on to win the tournament. In the 2022 edition, they reached the final but went down to England.
